Why the Ingredients in Macutene® Protect are Better

Eyecheck is committed to sourcing the highest quality and most natural ingredients we can find. Not all ingredients are created equal. Macutene® Protect has been carefully designed to provide you with the very best ingredients at optimal levels to support your macular and retinal health.

Lutein and zeaxanthin

Lutein and zeaxanthin -- important carotenoids where quality and sourcing matter.

The lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids known as macular pigment, found in Macutene Protect has FDA‐acknowledged GRAS notification and is an award-winning, globally-recognized and naturally-derived marigold extract with clinically supported bioavailability and efficacy.

Carotenoids are pigments that give fruit and vegetables their vibrant colors. They have a unique role in protecting the macula against oxidative stress. Macutene Protect contains all 3 macular carotenoids (lutein, RR-zeaxanthin, and RS [meso]-zeaxanthin) at the exact 5:1 ratio found in nature to support visual function and overall eye health.

Unlike many retinal health supplements which contain low levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, Macutene Protect contains 25mg of lutein and 5mg of zeaxanthin to provide for optimal macular health. These macular carotenoids specifically support the macula, the area of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision and most of our color vision.

The average American diet does not contain the proper amount of carotenoids needed for a healthy macula, even when eating healthy. The intake of lutein and zeaxanthin for the average American adult is 1- 2 mg per day, and we need much more than this for proper eye health. If we cannot receive the proper amount of nutrition for our retinal and macular health through the diet, we must take a high quality supplement. You would have to eat over 8 servings of nuts and vegetables a day to receive the same nutrient value as Macutene Protect.

Good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin in the diet include kale, spinach, broccoli and egg yolks.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are fat soluble, so be sure to consume with a meal for increased bioavailability.

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid)

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for eye health and is a powerful antioxidant. This is important for the eye because the eye has a high rate of metabolism and so needs an increased supply of antioxidants. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and is also important for synthesis of collagen, blood vessels, tendon, ligaments and bone. Vitamin C is also important for proper immune system function.

The Vitamin C in Macutene Protect is made using Quali-C, which in our opinion is the best form of vitamin C available. Made in Scotland, Quali-C is free of byproducts & contaminants. Quali-C is approved by the Vitamin C Foundation and is guaranteed by the quality seals GMP, HACCP, CEP, ISO-9001, ISO-14001 and FSSC22.000.

Food sources of Vitamin C include citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons, cantaloupe, kiwi and pineapple.

Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol)

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant and is important for proper immune function.

The vitamin E in Macutene Protect is all-natural and Non-GMO vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol) to help cross the blood-retina barrier. This form of Vitamin E is also the form that is active in the body and is the major form found in the tissue and blood. Most retinal health supplements use synthetic Vitamin E in their formulations, however many published studies show detrimental effects of using synthetic Vitamin E versus natural Vitamin E.

Good food sources of Vitamin E include sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts and soy.

Zinc citrate and copper citrate

Macutene Protect contains Zinc & Copper in citrate form for improved bioavailability & better absorption compared to zinc oxide.

Zinc -

The zinc in Macutene Protect is in citrate form for increased absorption. Zinc is an essential mineral that helps support the macula and dark adaptation. Zinc also plays an important role in the immune system, helps to synthesize proteins and DNA, and is important for normal growth and development in children. Food sources of zinc include oysters, beans and nuts.

Copper -

Copper is a trace mineral and helps to increase the absorption of zinc. It is an important component of many enzyme systems and can be found primarily in the liver, brain, bones and muscle. Copper supports eye health, acting as an antioxidant and supporting the development of connective tissue and collagen in the eye. Copper is also required to help the body process iron and is important for energy. Copper must be consumed and is found in liver, oysters, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Unlike many retinal health supplements which use 80 mg of zinc (what we believe to be an unnecessarily high level of zinc that is double the upper daily tolerable limit of 40mg), Macutene Protect contains a reduced dose of zinc (25mg) and a better form of zinc (zinc citrate). There is also a zinc free version of Macutene Protect that will be available soon. Patients taking Macutene Protect can also generally take a multivitamin in addition to Macutene Protect without exceeding the upper daily tolerable limit of zinc (40mg).

Additional Antioxidants

Bilberry Extract

Bilberry is a relative of the blueberry and can be found in the Rocky Mountains as well as Europe and Asia. Bilberry has been used for hundreds of years for its medicinal purposes. It is a superfood containing powerful antioxidants that may help support the retina and night vision.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a plant pigment found in fruits and vegetables including red onions, apples, berries, kale and gingko biloba. Quercetin is a potent antioxidant that helps support retinal health.

EGCG/Green Tea

EGCG is a powerful antioxidant found in green tea. Green tea comes from the plant Camellia sinensis and is a common dietary supplement, having been used in China and Japan for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. EGCG supports macular health by acting as an antioxidant. Green tea may also support mental alertness.
